Located throughout northern Indiana, Scott's Food Stores has earned a reputation as a high-service retailer focusing on customer satisfaction and product selection. Facing growing competition, Scott's realized they needed to maximize these strengths in order to maintain their position as a market leader in the region. Together with DSG, Scott's new flagship store achieved this objective with a space that has been described as "elegant industrial".

DSG's interior designers utilized a wide array of materials for the interior package, ranging from traditional ceramics and woods to ultra-modern Corian and plastics. Featuring a color palette that encourages the interplay of dark and light, the interior radiates a warm glow that is accentuated by the extensive use of wood throughout the store. Dramatic lighting and acid-edged metal decor add richness, while billboard photography of local children playing with food serves as a lighthearted element to demarcate each department.

DSG's store planning team created a layout that divided the store into three distinct shopping regions; upscale fresh food, traditional grocery, and neighborhood pharmacy. he addition of a wine department and in-store coffee shop reinforced the upscale image, and provided high margin areas through which to drive foot traffic.

A&E utilized high quality building materials and customer friendly architectural elements to set the tone in Scott's newest addition. A copper barrel vaulted beam which encompasses the wine department, reminiscent of an old world wine cellar, engages shoppers and imitates a specialty shop experience. To make the environment more service oriented, low service counters were incorporated to facilitate easy interaction between store workers and customers.

To make it easier for customers to peruse products on display, DSG's equipment service team procured European-style cases with flat glass fronts that reduce glare. DSG also worked with Scott's to develop their first in-house coffee program, sourcing and installing all equipment, fixtures, countertops and seating necessary for the initiative.

Don Scharlach, Central region project manager, coordinated the development of Scott's Fort Wayne store. In order to cut costs and keep the project on budget, Don coordinated the installation of refurbished equipment from a store in Indianapolis that had recently been shut down. Through creative solutions such as this, Don helped Scott's open their doors on schedule while trimming fat from the cost structure.
