Cub Foods, a SUPERVALU corporate banner, was looking to take a slightly different approach with their newest addition. Predominately a low cost grocer, Cub wanted to gain market share in the upscale segment while remaining a viable option for the value shopper. DSG responded with a comprehensive development package to achieve this end.
Decor was largely kept to a minimum in order to reinforce Cub's value image. DSG's interior design team did, however, integrate an in-store local historical photo collage to connect Cub to its roots in the Twin Cities and foster a sense of community with the shoppers it serves.
The store planning team created a layout designed to drive foot traffic through the perishables department, a staple destination of the upscale shopper. Working within a footprint that was significantly smaller than a typical Cub, DSG was able to modify the plan so that the supermarket was compatible with its sister-stores throughout the Midwest.
A&E incorporated a cost effective concrete brick exterior that was more economical than traditional brick cavity wall construction, and richer in appearance than standard pre-colored concrete block. The result was an exterior indistinguishable from its more expensive clay-brick counterpart, and far less labor intensive to lay up than traditional cavity wall construction.
DSG's equipment services team helped Cub realize substantial savings on their equipment package by leveraging strategic purchasing programs and bulk buys. DSG procured building component pieces for Cub such as HVAC, hoods, and dock equipment in addition to their standard equipment package on this project.
